Who is David Young?
David Young is the Assistant Principal Bassoonist of the National Symphony Orchestra. An enthusiastic pedagogue, he has presented masterclasses at Columbus State University, Georgia State University, and the Universities of Georgia, Kentucky, and Maryland. He has also performed as Acting Second Bassoon/Contrabassoon with the Bergen Philharmonic in Bergen, Norway and as a bassoonist with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. Regularly featured with “The President’s Own”, David appeared as a soloist performing André Jolivet’s Concerto for Bassoon and Michael Gilbertson’s The Cosmos with the United States Marine Chamber Orchestra. On the Marine Band’s chamber music series he performed such works as Bonneau’s Caprice en Forme de Valse, Rameau’s Suite la Triomphante, Stravinsky’s Octet, Barber’s Summer Music, and Gabaye’s Sonatine Duo. An active participant in the Marine Band’s educational outreach program, David coached high school participants in the Marine Band’s annual concerto competition and presented clinics in numerous public and private schools of all levels.
David has made appearances as guest Principal Bassoon with the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and the Sjøforsvarets Musikkorps in Norway. Other appearances have included the National Chamber Winds, New World Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Banff Festival Orchestra, New York String Orchestra Seminar, György Ligeti Academy (Amsterdam), and the National Repertory Orchestra, with which he was featured as a soloist in Frank Martin’s Concerto for Seven Winds.
David studied with Sue Heineman while attending the University of Maryland as a member of the graduate fellowship woodwind quintet, District5. With District5 he curated innovative concert programs and recorded Hindemith’s Kleine Kammermusik Op. 24 and a transcription of Brahms Piano Quartet No 1 in G minor, Op. 25. He completed a Bachelors in Music at Northwestern University where he studied with Christopher Millard and Lewis Kirk. As a winner of the Bienen School of Music’s concerto competition David performed Weber’s Andante e Rondo Ongarese with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble conducted by Dr. Mallory Thompson.
David lives in College Park, MD, where he maintains an active private studio.
